HEY ALL YOU COOL CATS AND KITTENS! Ted Lasso, Schitt’s Creek and My Little Pony have what in common?
This past March during our first quarantine, I was watching Tiger King (aka a complete shit show). I was left feeling confused, disturbed, concerned (especially for the tigers), and very uninspired. Not to mention I NEED them to find Carole Baskin's missing husband. I mean he is dead and she HAD to have something to do with it, right?
“You can see how they go from being so sweet to tearing your face off, just like that, and it’s amazing to have that range.”-Carole Baskin
I vowed to avoid anymore Jerry Springer-type shows. Which leads to me to Ted Lasso, Schitt’s Creek and My Little Pony…and what they all have in common.
BE YOU! BE YOURSELF! BE AUTHENTIC! BE KIND! FRIENDSHIPS AND FEELINGS MATTER! Each of these shows demonstrate how, when you tap in to who you truly are, you shine so bright - you SPARKLE like a constant shooting star!
The main characters are true examples of being true and authentic to who they are no matter what others think. Most importantly, why should we care what other people think about us? It’s incredibly freeing when we stop letting our brains and hearts worry so much about what other people think. Instead, let’s redirect that into caring what we think of OURSELVES!
“You know what the happiest animal in the world is? It’s a goldfish. It’s got a 10 second memory. Be a goldfish.”-Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso is the hero and coach I needed to end 2020. He is authentic, inspiring, and hilarious, and it was such a feel-good show. I loved the humor and characters. I will probably be using so much of Ted Lasso in my future coaching too! Sports fans, comedy fans or basically anyone NEED to watch this show. When they lost a big match my favorite part was Ted Lasso expressing to his athletes to take time to feel it - to be sad, to be mad, but then BE A GOLDFISH before their next match.
“Gossip is the devil’s telephone. Best to just hang up.”-Moira
Oh Schitt’s Creek, how I love thee, let me count the ways! I am literally watching the entire six seasons again right now because I LOVE it that much! The characters are so authentic, HILARIOUS, complex and true to themselves! They also not only accept one another’s differences but they embrace them. As an LGBTQ Advocate I LOVE how it shows two men in love and their beautiful love story! You MUST watch it. Pretty PLEASE just watch it! Give it four episodes and I bet you will get hooked just like I am!
“Pinkie Pie, who banished fear by giggling in the face of danger, represents the spirit of... laughter!"-Twilight Sparkle
My Little Pony.... I have a love/hate relationship because it is the ONLY show my son watches right now. Typically he changes his favorites after a few weeks but My Little Pony has lasted since this past March. He is OBSESSED. It never ends. Every single time I ask him what he wants to watch, it’s MY LITTLE PONY! It’s quarantine Groundhog Day every single day for this Mama! BUT, I LOVE how My Little Pony highlights talking about feelings, putting friends/kindness first, being true to yourself and embracing your passions and talents. I also love that Kaden calls me Pinky Pie because she is SO me! He is currently watching My Little Pony as I write this!
I am definitely going to do more reading in 2021 but I am also going to continue to watch shows that make me laugh and inspire me! More recent favorites: Soul on Disney, 12 years a Slave, The Queen’s Gambit, The Crown, 13th (a must watch for learning about how the Black Lives Matter Movement was started), and I love watching all the documentaries on Netflix! What are your favorite shows right now? Please send me your favorite recommendations! As always, spread kindness like glitter, EVERYWHERE! xo Shay xo
